You could always create a torrent and use Bit Torrent to share your gaim-cvs builds. It would save alot of bandwidth. :-)

What Hassan said.

Others have written me and asked for BT distribution, but the frequent releases would leave each new torrent without seeders within a few days, which is not acceptable.

And since I have nothing to do with Gaim proper (I follow the development closely, but have not contributed anything at all), I could hardly hog any more of SF's resources with this "project" than Gaim already does. I'm simply doing this so those of you who wish to, can have a peek at which ideas and features the developers are throwing about at the moment. Nothing more, nothing less. If the devs decide that they don't want these builds up at any time, I'll remove them, no questions asked. It's their program, after all.

But I'm happy to say that the bandwidth solutions have been solved - look for increased throughput shortly! :-)

Nope. I'm afraid that's not what Sourceforge is for. Sourceforge is there mainly for development & collaboration between devs. The way I see it, what Geddeth is doing here is providing a variety of Gaim builds. That is, compilation and distribution of binaries. No coding involved ( except for the tiny weeny scripting ).

What we're doing here is relieving the Gaim CVS from normal bleeding-edge users downloads. Most users don't even care about finding bugs & writing patches. That's what I think anyway. By routing these users to this site/mirrors, actual developers gain the CVS access speed & bandwidth they need , increasing their efficiency along the way. In other words, earlier stable builds for you and me.

On the bittorrent idea, I would support it if Gaim is >150MB after binary size optimization, and if the binary production cycle is once a fortnight. However, short production cycle ( daily CVS snapshot & compilation ) will impose trouble on downloaders. It's likely that 20% (a guess) downloaders will experience incomplete download when the seeders skip over to the next available snapshot.

And what about creating a project on "source forge"...
That contain the windows binary of gaim.

use bit torrent. not amazing d/l speeds, but if you have such a popular product, then the seed count will probably be high, and reliability isn't a problem. this also obviously eliminates the bandwidth problem, as it's distributed.

Let me put it this way: I'm really happy that Rui really is offering gigabytes of bandwidth for this project :) I'm seriously considering it.

Thanks for that script, also, Hassan - I'll look into it in a few days' time. ;)

Sorry rcas for doubting you :).
Accept my sincerest apology.

On another point, I had to do some Gaim stripping bcos of my college's limited disk space. Thus, I was able to experiment a bit. Here's a Makefile script for a runnable stripped Gaim:

###############################################
PARENT_OBJS = gaim.dll gaim.exe idletrack.dll libgtkspell.dll silc.dll silcclient.dll
PERLMOD_OBJS = perlmod/Gaim.dll
PLUGINS_OBJS = plugins/*

strip : $(OBJS)
	strip $(PARENT_OBJS) $(PERLMOD_OBJS) $(PLUGINS_OBJS)
##############################################

And then I deleted my locale folder.
The result is, the size of the whole folder goes from a whopping 36.8 MB to 6.0 MB ( unzipped of course ).

http://gaim.ruicampos.com is now up and working, the ftp account is also up and working for this specific subdomain.

If you want, contact me and I will give you the username and password.
If not, say so, so I can delete the subdomain and ftp account and help someone else.

Cheers.
